The 5 Types Of Employees That Are Destroying Your...
Some people are easy to avoid hiring because they give glaring hints that they’re unprofessional by doing things like treating your receptionist rudely or showing up an hour late to the interview. But many experienced entrepreneurs find that there are other folks, who, while polished, can eventually undermine a company culture. Some of these folks provide subtle signs that many bosses miss...

5 Principles Of Creating A Cultural Brand
Creating a unique and lasting cultural brand is the holy grail of advertising. Tapping into that nebulous mix of timing, attitude and emotion to not only recognize, but also reflect an ideology is something close to marketing magic. Only a few companies have succeeded, and even fewer do it well decade after decade—brands like Subaru, Starbucks, Apple and Ben and Jerry’s are a few that come to...

How To Get $25,000 From Charles Barkley
Last week while scanning the headlines, we stopped short upon reading that Charles Barkley, (yes, that Charles Barkley) is gifting $25,000 of his own money to a promising entrepreneur. What heartwarming news. But what does it feel like to be on the receiving end of such a big chunk of cash? To find out, Katie Morell called up 26-year-old Randall Martin Jr. of...

How Gabby Dunn Self-Promoted Her Way To Internet...
Gaby Dunn made all the right moves. She went to school for journalism and beefed up her resume and portfolio by writing for various news outlets, but when it came time for her graduation in 2009, the economy had tanked and so had the news industry—both of which now sit mostly in the same purgatory as they did then. Dunn, like so many others in her cohort, took a job that wasn’t...

Q&A With OpenTable Founder Chuck Templeton
Q: How did you get the idea for OpenTable? A: The idea came from a confluence of things in my life. I understood the trajectory that the tech industry was on. In addition, I paid my way through school by working in the restaurant industry. One weekend when my in-laws were visiting, and my wife wanted to make restaurant reservations. She ended up spending three and a...

How To Bring Your Brand To Life
Brian Solis recently released a new book called The End of Business As Usual: Rewire the Way You Work to Succeed in the Consumer Revolution. The inspiration for the book was the need for organizations to not only recognize the voice of the customer and the employee, but to finally do something about it. In the book, he talks about the importance of brand and brand essence during an era of what...

Whether your company is large or small, it can be daunting to muster up the courage to talk to the CEO. Street Smarts Trumps School
Matt May: But aren't the successful dropouts you write about standouts, outliers, exceptions to the rule?
Michael Ellsberg: Anyone who becomes a millionaire is, statistically speaking, an exception to the rule. Billionaires, even more so. We're not all going to become Mark Zuckerbergs. These are the most successful people on the planet. But no matter where you are in your economic life, learning real-world sales will give you a leg up. Learning real-world networking will give you a leg up. Learning real-world marketing will give you a leg up—much more so than learning abstract financial models applicable to multi-gazillion-dollar businesses in business school will, and certainly more than memorizing a bunch of history dates and spitting them back to some teacher who has never run a business in her life.
Matt May: So the one thing you want everyone to take away from The Education of Millionaires is...?
Michael Ellsberg: That we all need to start teaching ourselves.
